How to print from tablet at home
There are several possible printer setups.
Most common are:
- Locally connected printer
- Network shared printer connected to another computer
- Network ready printer with either built-in network
print server or attached to the specialized print server
appliance
For any of these you will need to logon to the tablet
as superuser. For more details,
Locally connected printer
This is a simple. All you need to do is to login to the
tablet as "superuser" and follow manufacturer instructions
to install printer. You must be logged in as "superuser".
Regular student or faculty accounts do not have rights to
install hardware components including printers. Usually
manufacturer instructions contain nothing more but
installing software that either came with printer or can be
downloaded from manufacturer web site. Once printer is
install under "superuser" account you should logoff, login
as yourself and printer will be there.
Network shared printer connected to another computer
This setup is also very common in modern households. Many
households with two and more computer implement the idea of
workgroups that allow easy integration and file and printer
sharing. Cary Academy tablets already members of Cary
Academy network domain and cannot be reconfigured for
workgroup use without serious consequenses. This however
does not prevent end user from setting up printing
capabilities at home. Here is what needs to be done.
- If home computer does not have a user account
with password set up then one should be created
- From tablet open "Printer and Faxes" applet and
choose "Add Printer". Wizard will open.
- Click next on first screen.
- Choose network printer when given a choice of
local and network printer on the next screen.
-
In Specify a printer dialog you need to type
path to the printer in the following format:
\\home_computer_name\name_of_printer_share (see
picture below). Click Next
- If you typed the computer name and printer
share name correctly you will be prompted for a
user name and password. Type user name and
password created in step 1. Very Important -
user name must be typed in the format of "home_computer_name\user_name".
That is - name of the computer should be typed
first followed by "\" followed by the actual
user name. Click OK button
- Finish the wizard. At the end there will be
a pause caused by drivers being downloaded from
the home computer.
- That's it.. Print test page to make sure
everything works.
