Seventh Grade Math Placement Criteria
Seventh grade math placement is determined at the end of sixth grade by the
sixth grade math teachers and the head of the middle school math department.
Thoughtful deliberation is used in making placement decisions in an effort to
ensure that each student has a successful math experience in the Middle School.
All students placed in Math 7, Transitional Math 7 or Algebra I (7th
Grade) will have the opportunity to take advanced courses in the Upper School.
Students enrolled in Math 6 will move to either Math 7 or Transitional Math 7
based on the following criteria:
-
Overall in-class assessment average {83 (B)
or above is required for Transitional Math}
-
Teacher observation over the course of a year
of a student’s abilities relative to that of her/his peers
-
Amount of additional assistance received from
the sixth grade teacher and/or an outside tutor
-
A student’s demonstrated cognitive
development in abstract thinking and generalizing
-
ERB scores on the
quantitative ability and mathematics sections
-
The impact a particular math placement might
have on a student’s ability to experience an overall successful seventh
grade year given the
academic demands of the seventh grade curriculum and the additional time
demands of seventh grade extracurricular activities
