What does Mrs. Murphy expect?
Be on time and prepared for class.  Being prepared means that you are to have your Tablet PC, binder, sharpened pencil with eraser, homework, calculator, and a “Best-that-I-can-be” attitude when you enter the classroom. You are to keep a section in your binder for all math work and a OneNote folder on your Tablet PC for class notes and homework. All completed activities, quizzes, and journals should be in the math section of your binder.  You should never throw any work in the garbage. At the end of each trimester you will be instructed to clean out the math section of your binder.

How is your grade calculated?
Your grade is broken down into four parts: mini-quizzes (10%), homework (15%), journals (15%) and quizzes (60%).  Approximately four quizzes are given each trimester and homework is given every night Monday through Thursday.  The quizzes build upon each other within a given trimester.  Prior to each quiz there will be a mini-quiz. This quiz will consist of a few questions that will help determine how prepared you are for the more significant quiz that will occur within the next week.  At all times students need to show all work neatly and in pencil.  You will receive a zero if homework is not with you at the beginning of class on the due date.  Journals may be turned in late, but you will lose 10 points from your grade for each day that it is late.  Every Monday you are required to write the weekly assignments in your planner and I will stamp it.  These assignments can also be found on my homework page.

What do I do if I have questions or I am confused?
This depends on when you are experiencing trouble.  If you are confused during class your first step should be to ask me for help. If you are confused when trying to complete your homework I encourage you to call a class mate or ask your parents. Your parents may look over your work but I would prefer that they only point out when something is incorrect and allow you to find your own mistakes. After each quiz you will be asked to complete quiz corrections. This is a time for you to reflect on your errors, possibly relearn a concept, and master it so that you do not make a similar mistake on the next quiz. Careless mistakes happen often and in order to remedy this you need to show your work neatly and know your basic facts very well. Each week I am available to answer questions about homework during break most days and during Enrichment on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

What should I do if I am absent?
If you are absent you have two days from your return to get in any homework missed.  A calendar is provided on my homework page and I recommend all students check this calendar if they are absent or plan to be absent in the future. If you miss school for a day you can obtain any make-up work upon your return. If the absence is for an extended period of time then work can be picked up at school.   If a quiz is scheduled on the day you return you are expected to take the quiz.  In the event that you are absent the day of a quiz you are expected to take the quiz immediately upon your return.  It is your responsibility to make sure that all make-up work has been turned in within the time specified.  If you are out for an extended period of time additional arrangements can be made.

What can I expect from math class this year?

I would describe my classroom as non-traditional. I want students to enjoy coming to math class, feel ownership over their learning, and be comfortable in their environment. Students should feel that they need to work in order to understand concepts and gain an in depth understanding so that they can apply the concepts that have been taught. In order to do this I use many group activities and games to reinforce concepts and gather the “bigger” picture. It is a student’s responsibility to take an active role in their learning.

Extra Effort
You can receive extra effort points towards your effort grade and challenge yourself in several ways.
