Ninth Grade Math
Placement Criteria
Ninth grade math placement is determined at the end of eighth grade
by the eighth grade math teachers and the head of the middle school
math department. Thoughtful deliberation is used in making placement
decisions in an effort to ensure that each student has a successful
math experience in the Middle School.
Students enrolled in Transitional Math 8 will move to Algebra I (9th
Grade).
Students enrolled in Algebra I (8th Grade) will move to
Geometry and students in Geometry (8th Grade) will move
to Algebra II based on the following criteria

Overall in-class assessment
average of 83 (B) or above
- Teacher
observation over the course of a year of a student’s abilities
relative to that of her/his peers
- A
student’s demonstrated cognitive development in abstract
thinking and generalizing

Amount of additional assistance
received from the eighth grade teacher and/or an outside tutor
-
The impact a particular math
placement might have on a student’s ability to experience an
overall successful ninth grade year given the
academic
demands of the ninth grade curriculum and the additional time
demands of ninth grade extracurricular activities
A
recommendation for an honors course in the ninth grade has the
following criteria:

Overall in-class assessment
average of 90 (A-) or above
- Teacher
observation over the course of a year of a student’s abilities
relative to that of her/his peers

Amount of additional assistance
received from the eighth grade teacher and/or an outside tutor
- A
student’s demonstrated cognitive development in abstract
thinking and generalizing

The impact a particular math
placement might have on a student’s ability to experience an
