Math Placement Criteria for Grade 8 to Grade 9

Ninth Grade Math Placement Criteria

Ninth grade math placement is determined at the end of eighth grade by the eighth grade math teachers and the head of the middle school math department. Thoughtful deliberation is used in making placement decisions in an effort to ensure that each student has a successful math experience in the Middle School.

Students enrolled in Transitional Math 8 will move to Algebra I (9th Grade).

Students enrolled in Algebra I (8th Grade) will move to Geometry and students in Geometry (8th Grade) will move to Algebra II based on the following criteria

  • Overall in-class assessment average of 83 (B) or above
  • Teacher observation over the course of a year of a student’s abilities relative to that of her/his peers
  • A student’s demonstrated cognitive development in abstract thinking and generalizing
  • Amount of additional assistance received from the eighth grade teacher and/or an outside tutor
  • The impact a particular math placement might have on a student’s ability to experience an overall successful ninth grade year given the academic demands of the ninth grade curriculum and the additional time demands of ninth grade extracurricular activities
