How to Make Streaming Video Files

The following steps will create a “wmv” file on a folder on a special area on the I: drive. Then you will make a link in your web page that will direct viewers to the wmv file. The wmv file will be created in a way that will allow viewers who have proper software on their computers to view the file as it “streams” over the Internet to their computer. This streaming is preferred to the older method of having to wait for the file to fully download before it can be viewed. Viewers who don’t have streaming computers, will still be able to see the video because their PCs will automatically download it the old way.

[These instructions assume that you are familiar with Premiere and have captured your video onto the computer and have edited the video and have it assembled on the Premiere Pro 2.0 timeline.]

Within the Premiere Pro 2.0 application

Click on the File->Export->Timeline->Adobe Media Encoder… menu item.

A Dialog Box will display that has several areas to fill in:

If you know what you are doing you may pick the appropriate profile for the audience that will see your streaming video. If you are unfamiliar with streaming settings, use the Cary Academy preset called "CA 256K 320x240". This will make a moderately small video file that displays a video 320x240 pixels--approximately half a normal DV size. After clicking on the OK button on the Export Settings window you will be given a chance to name the file. Make sure the file that will be made is on a local drive.

After Premiere has finished making the wmv file you will have to move it to a server location so that it can be accessed from web pages.

Locate the file that you just made and copy it to one of the following areas:

In faculty folder (where the faculty name is Bob Smith):

I:\streaming\faculty\bob_smith\filename.wmv

In projects folder:

I:\streaming\projects\foldername\filename.wmv

In FrontPage or other Web editing application

Make a link to the above wmv file using the following form depending on where you saved your wmv file.:

If you saved your wmv file in faculty folder:

mms:\\broadcast1.caryacademy.org\faculty\bob_smith\filename.wmv

Or, if you saved your wmv file in projects folder:

mms:\\broadcast1.caryacademy.org\projects\folder\filename.wmv

If you made two wmv files for two different bandwidth rates, make links for each of the files. (For examples of how to do this, look at Todd Shy’s web page.)

Note: If you are a student, you can't use the link by putting the address into Internet Explorer.

To use this link you will have to open it from Media Player or put the link into a web page. Or if a faculty you can put address directly into the IE address box.
