Julian Date

Julian dates (abbreviated JD) are simply a continuous count of days and fractions since noon Universal Time on January 1, 4713 BCE.  For calculations it is much simpler to use a decimal time than one broken up into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

BCE stands for Before Common Era and CE stands for the Common Era.  It is the politically correct way of saying B.C. and A.D. nowadays.
