Tuning Assignment
Goals
Identify notes that are out of tune on your instrument.
Learn to adjust your instrument or your embouchure (mouth) to play them in tune.
Instructions
| 1st Try | Play your tuning note for class
with the tuner and adjust the length of your instrument do that it is in
tune. Do not change the length of your instrument after this! With a partner, play each note on your tuning chart from low to high. The partner looks at the tuner and writes down how many cents Sharp (+) or Flat (-) each note is, rounding to the nearest 5 cents. If a note is within 5 cents of being in tune, the partner will write a check mark. |
| 2nd Try | Play your tuning note for class
with the tuner and adjust the length of your instrument do that it is in
tune. Do not change the length of your instrument after this! By yourself, play each note on your tuning chart from low to high. Look at the tuner while you are playing and adjust your instrument or embouchure until each note is within 5 cents of being in tune. If a note is within 5 cents of being in tune, write a check mark. If you are unable to adjust any notes to within 5 cents of being in tune, write down how many cents Sharp (+) or Flat (-) each note is, rounding to the nearest 5 cents. |
| 3rd Try (if necessary) | Play your tuning note for class
with the tuner and adjust the length of your instrument do that it is in
tune. Do not change the length of your instrument after this! With a parent, play each note on your tuning chart from low to high. The parent looks at the tuner and writes down how many cents Sharp (+) or Flat (-) each note is, rounding to the nearest 5 cents. If a note is within 5 cents of being in tune, the parent will write a check mark. Continue the process until each note can be played within 10 cents of being in tune. If you are unable to adjust any notes to within 10 cents of being in tune, see Mr. Grush for an appointment. |
