Concepts

Binary Form – musical form with 2 sections (A and B).  Either/ both may be repeated.

Texture – melodic patterns, accompaniment patterns, relationship of melody to accompaniment, number of instruments playing

Orchestration – combination of instruments playing at a given time

Theme and Variations – musical form in which a theme is introduced and then changes are made in the melody (notes or rhythms), harmony (chord structure or key center), or texture/orchestration

Pedal Tone – one note held in the bass while the harmony changes above it

 

Terminology -  define each

Analysis – Mark on your score

1.     Identify Keys of the piece (primary key, and when it changes)

2.     Identify where each of the four variations and the coda begins

3.     Identify Chords in measures: 16, 49-56, 73-74, 142 fermata,
145-149 (do not count the pedal C in the bass)

4.     Identify scales in measures: 57-60, 65, 67, 69

5.     Variation 1 – who has theme?  Who plays a countermelody?

6.     Variation 2 – what is the relationship of this key to the original key?

7.     Variation 3 – who introduces the theme? Who takes over the theme after 8 bars? Who plays a countermelody?  What instruments drop out?

  1. Variation 4 – what instruments are added to the orchestration? What rhythmic changes are made to the B section of the theme?
