Welcome to the sixth grade. The purpose of this section is to explain how class “works” and to help you organize your materials and time in order to be successful in your studies.
Be on time and prepared for class. Being prepared means that you are to have your Tablet PC, binder, pencil with eraser, homework, calculator, and a “Best-that-I-can-be” attitude, when you enter the classroom. You are to keep a section in your binder for all math work and a One Note folder on your Tablet PC for warm-ups and class notes. All activities, quizzes, and journals should be in the math section of your binder. You should never throw any work in the garbage. At the end of each trimester you will be instructed to clean out your math section.
This depends on when you are experiencing trouble. If you are confused during class your first step should be to ask me for help. If you are confused when trying to complete your homework I encourage you to call a class mate or ask your parents. Your parents may look over your work, but I prefer that they only point out when something is incorrect and allow you to find your own mistakes. After each quiz you will be asked to complete quiz corrections. This is a time for you to reflect on your errors, possibly relearn a concept and master it so that you do not make a similar mistake on the next quiz. Careless mistakes happen often and in order to remedy this you need to show your work neatly and know your basic facts very well.
If you are absent you have two days from your return to get in any homework missed. A calendar is provided on my homework page and I recommend all students check this calendar if they are absent or plan to be absent in the future. If you miss school for a day you can obtain any make-up work upon your return. If the absence is for an extended period of time then work can be picked up at school. If a quiz is scheduled on the day you return you are expected to take the quiz. In the event that you are absent the day of a quiz you are expected to take the quiz immediately upon your return. It is your responsibility to make sure that all make-up work has been turned in within the time specified. If you are out for an extended period of time additional arrangements can be made.
What can I expect from math class this year?
I describe my classroom as non-traditional. I want the students to enjoy coming to math class, feel ownership over their learning and be comfortable in their environment. Students should feel that they need to work in order to understand concepts and gain an in depth understanding so that they can apply the concepts that have been taught. In order to do this I use a lot of group activities and games to reinforce concepts and gather the “bigger” picture. It is a student’s responsibility to take an active role in their learning.
