Committee Meeting Minutes, 04/02/01
Present: Don Berger, Denise Goodman, Lori Mason, and Bob Roth
Don Berger, chairman, called the meeting to order at 4:07 P.M.
The committee discussed comments and corresponding suggestions
from the 2000 School Survey regarding communication. The committee
felt that specific examples of issues were necessary to adequately
address some of the comments. Those examples were not included in
the survey as provided by BKL Research & Consulting.
However, the committee did discuss the following suggestions:
-
Higher degree of communication of the results of the disciplinary
process – The Administration will act swiftly in these matters.
-
Board representation – A parent of a Cary Academy alumnus will
fill Bill Friday’s seat on the Board of Directors.
-
Parents’ role in decision making – Don Berger pointed out that
a number of school committees provide parents a huge say in how
activities and plans are structured, e.g., the Service Learning
and Open Space Committees. Parents can join a committee in which
they expect to make an impact.
-
Increased parent and student involvement in selection of social
and athletic activities – Don stated this is the job of the
Administration; however, ideas should come from the students.
-
Teachers updating websites and homework – The committee felt
this has improved.
-
Parents evaluating teachers – Don is not aware of an appropriate
way for parents to evaluate teachers; this is not the parents’
role. If parents cannot resolve an issue with a teacher they
should follow the published Guidelines for Parent/School
Communication.
-
Parents should be informed of major issues that would concern them
-
Don admitted the Administration has not responded to parents
regarding some matters of safety that were raised last year.
-
Don stated that theft was not a big enough problem for the school
to change its policy.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 P.M. The next meeting will be
Monday, May 7th at 4:00 P.M
