Back to Review Board Home Application for Campus Improvements Proposed Project: Treatment of the slope along the Upper School parking lot Purpose: This area has become a pressing problem due to the existing dangerous slope (for mowing) and erosion due to the new construction. The plantings and steps will improve the appearance, reduce erosion, and eliminate the mowing hazard for this long slope and provide access to the fields above the parking lot. Scope of Work: The South Slope will include a wide variety of mostly native plants (see attachment) with outstanding fall color, spring bloom, and a mix of evergreens for winter interest. The slope planting would also add to the diversity of plants on campus, especially shrub and understory layer. This work will be contracted out and funded by the Grounds Committee from its annual budget. In addition, two or three sets of steps will be constructed. The steps will be designed by Louis Cherry and funding for the steps will be the school’s responsibility (per Don Berger). Both projects will begin in early 2003. Academic / Curriculum Needs: Not applicable. Funding: Installation budget (see attached) Annual maintenance will include occasional pruning, watering for the first year only, and usual pest control. These are self-sustaining, mostly indigenous plants and should require no additional budget considerations for maintenance. Appropriateness: The plantings will enhance the natural environment and reduce negative environmental impact of the eroding slope. The steps will provide safe and clean access to the upper fields (field hockey and cross-country) as well as the back area of the school. The Grounds Committee has parent, facilities staff, faculty and administration representation. Given the scope of the project, this meets the requirement for engaging the broader committee. Exhibits: budget, site-plan and plant list produced by Susan Little, Landscape Architect with Little and Little (Raleigh, NC). Submitted By: Louise Romanow, Chair of Grounds Committee Date: 12/12/02 Action Taken: Approved by committee, 12/12/02
