Back to Review Board Home Application for Campus Improvements Proposed Project: Creation of a Grove along the slope in front of Harrison Avenue. Purpose: The Grove provides a space on campus for the planting of important species of trees by the school community for beauty, comfort, and study. Tree gifts can be planted in the Grove. Scope of Work: The Grove covers 1.6 acres between the front drive and Harrison Avenue. The design plan allows for planting 35 trees over a number of years. The school may add as many or as few trees each year as it wishes. The area is divided into five zones. Zones will be prepared for planting sequentially, with all the trees in one zone being planted before the next zone gets prepared. 35 different species will be planted in the Grove. (see attachments) Work on zone 1 will begin in January, 2003. Academic / Curriculum Needs: The Grove provides specimens of important native tree species for study by students in both the middle and upper school. . Funding: The Grounds Committee will provide funding for soil preparation for zone 1. The first tree for zone 1 has been funded by the 8th grade graduating class of 2002. Annual maintenance will include occasional pruning, watering for the first year only, and usual pest control. These are self-sustaining, mostly indigenous trees and the project should require no additional budget considerations for maintenance. Appropriateness: The Grove provides an opportunity to plant tall trees, to provide shade, to reduce grass on campus, to reduce the noise and wind from Harrison Avenue. The taller trees will also balance the massive scale of the buildings on campus. Finally, the Grove will provide comfortable gathering areas as requested by the school community via the Long Range Plan and associated surveys. Exhibits: site-plan and plant list produced by Susan Little, Landscape Architect with Little and Little (Raleigh, NC). Submitted By: Louise Romanow, Chair of Grounds Committee Date: 12/12/02 Action Taken: Approved by committee, 12/12/02
