¨ Long-Range Plan update - Ann Goodnight met with a number
of GC members Sept 4 and we agreed to submit the LR Plan as
is to the CA Board October 28 for their approval of the
concept and goals of the plan. We shall revise and expand
the plan after their initial approval. Don to present?
¨ Fall / winter plantings:
1. Shumard oak (8th grade gift) We agreed that we would not
supplement the $300 the class provided so givers can see the
size of tree which is available for that cost. Additionally,
we want to be careful about setting a precedent of providing
additional funds for gift trees. Susan to tag.
2.
Replace 2 Zelkovas, 1 on quad and other along road, use
replacements of those lost in SEA courtyard and leave those
missing.
Jess to check if ‘free’.
3. Community Planting Days: We have scheduled 2 days for
community planting projects. The Environmental Club is also
interested in participating. (Thanks, Heidi.) November 8
(rain date November 9) to plant donation of green-and-gold (Chrysogonum)
and blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium) around the steps on the
US slope and January 12 (rain date January 19) to plant
seedlings from NC Division of Forest Resources on the slope
after it has been prepped and mulched by Myatt. Susan to
pursue. Perhaps plant in other selected areas of the campus.
Louise to order tree seedlings.
4. Allée trees for behind 1 dugout and along the fire lane,
complementing the row of trees already on one side. Species?
We would like to consider American chestnuts from the
American Chestnut Foundation. Heidi will investigate their
possible providing of trees. What size? We’d then provide
the planting. Louise to consult Susan.
5. Planter trees for the café planters will be selected and
planted w/ maintenance (not GC) funds in the fall. Ideas:
curly-leafed ligustrum, something evergreen and dark. Jim to
find plants and plant them when planters are rejuvenated in
the fall.
¨ MS Pavilion. Louise has called CA architect Louis Cherry
to request a preview of the plans for our October 23
meeting. We hope that this area will come w/ furniture and
we plan to draw up a plan and will ask the MS what they
would like.
¨ Outdoor Classroom. Have planned and priced-out proposed
outdoor stone seating area and associated
landscaping/plantings near flagpole and request funding for
2004-5. We need a name for this space. Any ideas other than
‘outdoor classroom’?
¨ Furniture
1. Care of present furniture: Jess has an arrangement w/
housekeeping to keep the tables clean, but cleaning of other
places students eat (e.g. benches and other tables around
the quad) still probably needs attention, including sanding
off graffiti, etc. Heidi, Louise, Sally, Eloise, Mitch
McGuigan and Delia DeCourcy. Jess to oversee: furniture
should be periodically checked for sturdiness and screws
tightened and fasteners attached as needed – once a
trimester and summer session (4x/y)? Use detention students
as often as needed to move furniture back to place (and to
look at it while they’re at it to see if any is loose or
damaged). (I think starting w/ 1x/2wk is a good frequency.)
provide a map of placement.
2. Planning and purchase of furniture, trashcans and
planters: SEA area: Sally and Eloise will prepare a list of
furniture needs and prices for our next meeting. We will
submit this to Don in hopes that the SEA contingency fund
can cover the cost. MS Pavilion: Sally and Eloise will
propose furnishings once the plan is viewable. Consult the
MS.
¨ Leaf Collection: Jess to arrange with Town of Cary in
remains of construction lot. Bullard Tree Service will also
deliver chips in a row along the far-from-the-opening short
end of the lot.
¨ Master Landscape Plan update. ($2-3000?) Andrew will
arrange that the club he is advising take aerial photos.
Perhaps we can get an NCSU graduate student to ID plants and
update the plan and provide it to us in a form we can access
and update as necessary at a reduced cost. Louise will
contact faculty at NCSU. Our goal: a CA-readable and
amendable planting map (interactive??)
¨ Website. Louise is working w/ Brandon Wu, Richard Feindel
and Saurabh Aneja of the computer website club to design and
put together a GC website.
Dates for future meetings. Somehow we got talking about a
November meeting, but there’s October in between, so let’s
plan the next meeting for October 23 in the Student Center
conference room at 3:15. We’ve also set November 16 for the
following meeting, same place.
