Discussion of environmental considerations for a long-term
landscaping plan
As an integral part of that plan we are evaluating the
sustainability of anything we currently do and propose to do
as well as considering how we can impact the environment in
a positive way both as a legacy and as a message to our
students.
How can we promote an environmentally sensitive grounds
maintenance and development philosophy? Topics to consider
may include
v increasing shade on campus
v reducing chemical use and mowing
v better erosion control
v using less water
v selecting appropriate plant material
v more nurturing of existing plant material, trees, shrubs &
beds
v evaluating various fertilizer and mulching methods.
Also important are the aesthetics and the cost/benefits of
additional resources.
How to proceed? Who can do what?
v develop an erosion-control program
v develop a program to lessen water requirements
v this winter's projects/goals
§ planting large trees
§ erosion control
v develop a more comprehensive maintenance plan to include
mulching methods, trees and shrub care, grass care
(appropriate to area - structured, buffer, athletic, etc)
v develop program for water use
