Facilities and Grounds Review Board

Cary Academy wishes to acknowledge the thoughtful and significant contributions from the members of the now-defunct Open Space Committee that laid the groundwork for the Facilities and Grounds Committee: John Miller, Louise Romanow, Sally Butler, Eloise Robinson and the Director of Facilities.
 

 

  


Mission

The Facilities and Grounds Review Board of eleven members will approve grounds and landscaping improvements, new building placement, and changes to the Cary Academy building exteriors and campus grounds.


Composition of the Committee

Members include the Head of School, the Heads of the Middle and Uppers Schools, a faculty member appointed from each of the schools, the Director of Facilities, a board member, three appointed parents members, and a student representative. The committee shall include a chair of the Grounds Committee and shall name a chair from the its members. A quorum shall be at least half the committee's members. Terms of appointment shall be for 3 years. Initial appointments shall be for 2, 3 or 4 years.


Responsibilities

This Facilities and Grounds Review Board shall, in a timely manner, review and recommend or reject all projects proposed for the school grounds. This committee will have the authority to approve only projects that conform to the CA Campus Plan and the Design Principles as prescribed by the Open Space Committee and approved by the Board. The committee will report to the Board and apprise the Board of its decisions and recommendations.


Guidelines

For any proposed project, improvement or other change, the committee will determine that:

  • The scope and detail of the project is well defined
  • The improvements conform to the Campus Plan and Design Guidelines as prescribed by the Campus Open Space Committee and approved by the Board
  • The project is mission-appropriate
  • All academic program-driven requests must be supported by the academic community
  • All other improvements or requests must be supported by the Cary Academy community, e.g., the Grounds Committee, the sports program, clubs, parents, etc.
  • The project includes a sound plan for funding installation and long-term maintenance

The Facilities Committee shall design a one page application that asks a few questions of sponsors to help the committee determine that the guidelines noted above are met. Requests should include a site plan.


Meetings

The committee will conduct regular, convenient meetings as needed. They may also conduct committee business as part of the Leadership Team meeting agenda.
