Committee on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity - COMID

The mission of the Committee on Multicultural Initiatives and Diversity (COMID) is to foster our community and environment where the richness of our diversity is recognized, respected and embraced. Our view on diversity includes, but is not limited to, ethnic, racial and linguistic heritage; religious traditions; gender; sexual orientation; age; and socioeconomic status.

COMID MEETING MINUTES, Monday, December 19,2005 -

Present: Andrea Weathers, Cameron Lee, Katja Heater Lee, Abby Weathers, Carol Hewitt, Denise Goodman, Mari Asanuma Jameel, Jason Franklin

Meeting was called to order at 3:30 pm.

Topic 1:  The prototype of the Diversity Brochure was distributed and commented on.  Some suggestions:

  • 1st Page – Move the “global citizens” sentence as the 2nd sentence to emphasize that goal.

  • 2nd Page -

  • Get rid of the “recruitment goals”
  • Have a breakdown of the minority students
  • Insert a sentence about our religious diversity
  • Put in a link so that people can access more information

Topic 2: Jason distributed a “Diversity Day” pamphlet as something we might wish to pursue at CA.  Abby Weathers received the document.

Topic 3: COMID members were broken out into 4 groups.  The assignments are:

  • COMID GOAL 1 – “Support and stimulate a community that nurtures and values individuals of diverse backgrounds and embraces the ever-changing nature of diversity (community relations)”. – Randy Lee, Katja Heater Lee, Marina Evans
  • COMID GOAL 2 – “Prepare students to be successful global citizens” – Carol Hewitt, Abby Weathers, Shelton Shepherd, Carlos Alvelo
  • COMID GOAL 3 – “Develop and implement initiatives to attract, retain, and actively maintain a diverse population”. – Denise Goodman, Mari Asanuma Jameel, Vince Janney.
  • COMID GOAL 4 – “Conduct community assessment and update the plan” – Andrea Weathers, Cameron Lee.

If you are not assigned to a task, please let Jason know and he will put you to work!!

Due to limited scheduling by NCAIS and ISM, we are unable to perform a community  assessment in January as originally planned.  We will still go ahead with these goals, and make adjustments as needed when the community assessments are conducted in August or September 2006.

Meeting was adjourned at 4:30 pm.

COMID meetings beginning January 2006 will be held on the third Thursday of each month.  Jason will send out a new updated schedule.
