Epiphany
The twelve days of
Christmas (December 25-January 6th)
are known as Epiphany. On the eve of Epiphany, children
from Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico and most of Latin America
place water and grass under their beds for the camels of the
three wise men (or the three Kings, as they are better known
locally). In return, the three Kings brings presents, which
they leave under the bed, after the camels eat the grass.
Children wake up early on January 6th
("Dia de Reyes") to see what Baltazar, Melchior, and Gaspar
left them. Epiphany commemorates the day in which the three
wise men arrived bearing gifts for the Christ child. Some
European countries celebrate Epiphany with a King’s cake.
The cake has a trinket baked into it and the person who gets
the prize is crowned for the evening. Epiphany marks the end
of the Christian liturgical season of Christmas.
