EID-al-Adha - December 30, 2006

The Festival of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) is one of two major Islamic celebrations and takes place on the tenth day of the Islamic month Dhul-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar in which millions of Muslims from around the world make an annual pilgrimage to Mecca in order to worship Allah and to commemorate the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in response to a command from God. Satisfied with Abraham's devotion, God replaced Ishmael with a sheep at the last second, and the sheep was slaughtered instead.

The celebration of Eid al-Adha commemorates this event as Muslims all over the world sacrifice an animal during this Eid. This sacrifice is known as Qurbani. A Muslim who performs or pays for a Qurbani to be performed shares the meat amongst fellow Muslims in three portions. One third is for the poor, one third for family and friends and the last third for his own household.
