Cary Academy Enjoys Another Outstanding Showing at The Crestian
The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team had another
outstanding performance at the Crestain tournament hosted by the Pine Crest
School of Florida. This was CA's fourth trip to the Crestian and the most
successful one to date. Senior John Nelson advanced to the final round of
International Extemporaneous Speaking placing 5th, and senior Ben Goldhaber
advanced to the final round of United States Extemporaneous Speaking placing 4th.
Juniors Firoz Jameel and Ian Molvie also broke in the speech events reaching the
semifinals of International Extemporaneous Speaking and the quarterfinals of
Humorous Interpretation respectively. In Lincoln Douglas Debate, senior Arjun
Chandran (08) was an octafinalist placing in the Top 16.

CA Makes Big Splash at Florida Blue Key

Cary Academy attended the Blue Key tournament hosted by the University of Florida for the first time and made quite a first impression. Arjun Chandran (08) won the tournament title in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate winning the final round on a 3-2 decision. Arjun was first in a pool of 84 debaters who represented 5 different states. After six preliminary rounds the tournament broke to Double Octas where Arjun proceeded to defeat 5 opponents on his way to the tournament title. In Novice LD, John Peebles (09) advanced to the round of 16 before losing in only his 3rd LD tournament. In Extemporaneous Speaking, both John Nelson (08) and Firoz Jameel (09) double broke advancing in the both the Domestic and Foreign divisions. John went all the way to the final round in the Domestic division placing 5th, in addition to making the quarterfinals of Foreign Extemp. Firoz was a quarterfinalist in Domestic and a semifinalist in Foreign. Congratulations to these students for there outstanding performances.

Students Excel at Liberty Bell Classic
Seven Cary Academy students traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend of October 6-7 to attend the Liberty Bell Classic hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Public Forum Team of Mikey Rooney (09) and Andrew Copland (09) reached the quarterfinal round; and the team of Michael Kahn (09) and Austin Cooper (10) complied a 4-1 record and should have advanced to elimination rounds, but due to a tabulation error were mistakenly left out of the elimination bracket. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Firoz Jameel reached the final round placing 4th. Congratulations to these students for their fine performances at an extremely competitive tournament.

Novices Shine in their Debut
Over 30 Cary Academy students traveled to Southern Pines on Saturday September 29th to participate in Pinecrest High School's Eastern JV/Novice Tournament. The team had an outstanding showing with 18 students placing in their respective events. Highlights included second place showings in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate, JV and Novice Public Forum Debate, and Student Congress. For a full list of winners please consult our awards page.

Cary Academy Enjoys Record Showing at National Early Bird
The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team began its year by having its strongest showing ever at the National Early Bird tournament hosted by Wake Forest University. John Nelson (08) and Ben Goldhaber (08) reached the final round placing second and thrid respectively in Extemporaneous Speaking. They were joined in the semifinals of Extemp by Elizabeth Atkins (08). In Junior Varsity LD, Andy Flook (09) reached the final round before losing placing second. He is the first Cary Academy debater to reach a final round at the National Earlybird. In Varsity LD, Arjun Chandran (08) was the second place speaker and reached the Double Octafinal round before losing. In Public Forum Debate the team of Mikey Rooney (09) and Andrew Copland (09) also reached the Double Octafinal round.

Cotter Places in Top 30 at Nationals

Senior Kevin Cotter reached the 10th round of competition in Lincoln Douglas Debate at this year's National Forensic League National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Wichita, Kansas. This placed Kevin in the top 30 of over 225 competitors from across the country. This is the best performance ever by a Cary Academy student at the National Championship. Kevin's performance also caused him to surpass 1000 NFL points making him the all time points leader in Cary Academy history, as well as the first student to earn a degree of Outstanding Distinction from the National Forensic League. Congratulations to Kevin on these accomplishments as well as on an outstanding debate career.

Nine Qualify for Nationals
Nine Cary Academy students qualified to represent the Tarheel East District at this year's National Speech and Debate Tournament to be held in Kansas in June. This is the most ever in a single year. Those qualifying were Kevin Cotter (07) in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Vinny Tumminello (07) & Tyler Phillips (07) in Public Forum Debate, Brendan Szulik (07) & Kelsey Nix (07) in Humorous Interpretation, Arjun Chandran (08) & David Thorstad (08) in Policy Debate, and John Nelson (08) & Ben Goldhaber (08) in Extemporaneous Speaking. Congratulations and good luck in Kansas.

Cary Academy Closes Out Varsity LD at States

The Cary Academy Speech & Debate team had an outstanding showing at the State Championship Tournament placing 4th in overall sweeps and claiming the award for 3rd place debate sweepstakes. The team was led by an unprecedented close out of Varsity LD. Kevin Cotter (07) and Robert Thorstad (08) closed out the final round, with Robert advancing over David Thorstad (08) in the semifinal round. CA was one win away from a closeout of semis with Arjun Chandran (08) reaching the quarterfinal round before losing. Robert Thorstad was the top speaker in the Varsity division, and Cotter was 3rd. Ben Goldhaber (08) reached the final round of Extemporaneous Speaking placing 4th. The team of Andrew Copland (09) and Mikey Rooney (09) reached the quarterfinal round of Varsity Public Forum and were the 2nd Place Speakers in the division. Kelsey Nix (07), Brendan Szulik(07), Sam Fuchs(07), and John Nelson (08) were semifinalists in Individual Events as well. Lastly, Ryan Watson (07) was a finalist in Congressional Debate.

Cotter, Phillips, Tumminello, & Orol qualify for CFL Nationals

eniors Kevin Cotter, Tyler Phillips, and Vinny Tumminello, and sophomore Josh Orol placed in the top 4 in their respective events at the Catholic Forensic League Qualifying Tournament held at Pine Forest on December 16th. They earned the right to represent Eastern North Carolina at the CFL Grand Nationals to be held in Houston, Texas this May.

Nix wins Princeton Classic

enior Kelsey Nix won the Princeton Classic in Humorous Interpretation this past weekend in Princeton, New Jersey. This is Kelsey's 3rd straight tournament victory. Seniors Tyler Phillips & Vinny Tumminello also placed in Public Forum Debate clearing to the Octafinal Round.

Speech & Debate Excels in November
The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team had a very busy and very successful month of November. In spite of the fact that students had time off for the trimester break, the team attended three tournaments bring home numerous titles and runner up finishes. At the Open at East Chapel Hill High School, Cary Academy placed second overall as a team, won three of the four debate divisions, placing second in the fourth; as well as closed out the top three spots in Extemporaneous Speaking. At the Jack Britt Invitational, the team took home three first place finishes, and also took the top 3 spots in Varsity Lincoln Douglas. The team concluded its month by attending the Cougar Classic hosted by Asheville High School. Cary Academy had 4 of the top 10 in Varsity LD, with Kevin Cotter (07) placing second. Andy Flook (09) was the top speaker in Novice LD, and Kira Lumsden (08) was the runner up in her chamber of Novice Student Congress. CA Brings Home Sweepstakes Awards at Furniture City & Capital City Invitationals
The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team had impressive showings the last two weekends of the month bringing home a sweepstakes award from both the Furniture City Invitational hosted by High Point Central High School, and the Capital City Invitational hosted by Enloe High School. In High Point, the team placed second behind Pinecrest High School; and at Enloe in Raleigh the team brought home first place. Cotter places at Liberty Bell Classic
Seniors Kevin Cotter and Sam Fuchs traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend of October 7-8 to attend the Liberty Bell Classic hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Kevin accumulated a 4-1 prelim record and advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated. He was also the 10th place speaker.

CA Students Excel at Independence & Myers Park
Over the last two weekends the Cary Academy Speech & Debate team has ventured south to the city of Charlotte to compete against teams from North and South Carolina. On September 30th the team attended the Hawkins May Junior Varsity/Novice Invitational hosted by Independence High School. Cary Academy closed out Novice Extemporaneous Speaking taking the top 3 places, had 4 of the top 7 in Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate, and had 3 students place in the top 4 of their chamber of Novice Student Congress. On October 7th, the team again traveled to Charlotte to participate in the Laird Lewis Invitational hosted by Myers Park High School. Brothers David and Robert Thorstad (08) placed 2nd and 5th respectively in Varsity Lincoln Douglas Debate, and the team of Andrew Copland and Mikey Rooney(07) placed 4th in Novice Public Forum Debate.

Cary Academy Enjoys Record Showing at National Early Bird
The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team began its year by having its strongest showing ever at the National Early Bird tournament hosted by Wake Forest University. The team ranked 13th overall in sweepstakes out of a field of over 150 schools from over 15 states. Robert Thorstad (08) was the top seed in Varsity LD with a 6-0 prelim record and reached the round of 16 before losing. Also in Varsity LD, Kevin Cotter (07) was the 7th place speaker, and Thorstad was the 14th place speaker. In JV LD, David Thorstad (08) reached the semi-final round, in addition to being the 6th place speaker. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Ben Goldhaber (08) reached the semi-final round after finishing prelims as the second seed. In Public Forum Debate, the team of Tyler Phillips & Vinny Tumminello (07) reached the quarterfinal round.
