Cary Academy Sweeps LD & Public Forum at States

The Cary Academy Speech & Debate team had an outstanding showing at the State Championship Tournament placing 4th in overall sweeps and claiming the award for 3rd place debate sweepstakes. The team was led by state championships in both Varsity divisions of debate.  Arjun Chandran (08) won Varsity Lincoln Douglas, and the team of Andrew Copland (09) and Mikey Rooney (09) were crowned the champions of Varsity Public Forum Debate. In both divisions the eventual champions won their semifinal and final rounds on unanimous decisions. In Varsity LD, David Thorstad (08) reached the quarterfinal round and was named the Top Speaker. Arjun Chandran (08) was the second place speaker. In Junior Varsity LD, Zach Dresher was a quarterfinalist. Firoz Jameel (08) was the top seed and reached the final round of Extemporaneous Speaking placing 2nd. Ian Molvie (09) was second in Humorous Interpretation. Lastly, Kira Lumsden (08) and Alisha Jarwala (11) were finalists in Congressional Debate.

Cary Academy Qualifies 5 Students to Vegas Nationals

The Cary Academy Speech and Debate Team  brought home an unprecedented 4 District Championships this year and in the process qualified 5 students to compete in this year's National Speech and Debate Tournament to be held in Clark County Nevada this June. Senior Arjun Chandran(08) was undefeated in Lincoln Douglas Debate, and juniors Firoz Jameel(09) and Ross Plastina(09) went undefeated in Public Forum Debate. Seniors John Nelson (08) and Ben Goldhaber (08) were the champions of International and Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking respectively, with Goldhaber receiving a rank of first in all his rounds, and Nelson receiving a rank of first in all but one round where he was ranked second. Cary Academy has won the district championship in LD for six straight years and has qualified at least one extemporaneous speaker to nationals for the last eight years. Several other students performed extremely well at the district tournament allowing the team to place second in overall sweepstakes. For a full list of winners consult out awards page.
