Lecture Series Committee Meeting 11-6-06

Sam: found speaker from EPA who works at Research Triangle Park

Coven: we have speakers for global warming topics, what about pandemics? We need to write the "prompt" for the potential speakers; will give direction to the speaker as well as the background information for the students

Ben: knows speaker who taught a terrorism type class at his synagogue who worked in Israel

Coven: we shouldn't just talk about terrorism in the 2nd lecture. Could also bring in a historian who could compare present nuclear problems w/ Cuban missile crisis, etc.

Ben: global warming speaker update: looking at teacher at UNC

Coven: underlying idea: Americans tend to react only when there is great fear, we are not easily motivated unless there is a clear, immediate danger; sometimes people add to the "clarity and immediacy" in order to push their agenda in a particular way; how much of what we do and feel are determined by fear, and who much is a reaction to reality; add hyper-competitiveness to the last lecture.

Sarah: Svi Shapiro could be good for the last lecture

Jon: congressional representative on homeland security committee: Bob Ethridge (Democrat) only person from NC on that committee

Coven: someone from Burr's office or Dole's office

Kim: Qualridge books--look to see who is coming in as speakers for possible inspiration

Coven: look at Regulator Bookshop and Barnes and Noble

Jon: not so sure about Dole and Burr and what committees they are on. Dole is on arms services committee and on "emerging threats and capabilities." Burr would probably be better b/c he is on more relevant committees (bio-terrorism, health preparedness, energy)

General meeting:

Coven: First application process is starting tomorrow. One of the things prospective NHS members must do is speak to 3 members. Expect to invite conversations with these people! Apps are due in mid-December. By end of Jan. to beginning of Feb.
