Novice Chinese (Middle School) 1 credit

Emphasis in this course is on the acquisition of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are introduced to the Chinese Pinyin and tonal system, learning to recognize and pronounce 300 Chinese characters, as well as how to use Chinese software to reproduce those characters.  Students are also introduced to important aspects of the history and culture of the Chinese-speaking world.

Intermediate-Low Chinese 1 credit

In this course students add 200 characters to their vocabulary base while expanding their knowledge of Chinese sentence structure. They also begin reading simple texts on a variety of subjects from the Chinese-speaking world and use computer software to write short sentences in Chinese.  Prerequisite: Novice Chinese (Upper School) or Novice-High Chinese (Middle School).

In this course students develop their listening and speaking skills using a variety of authentic materials and, with increased knowledge of 200 characters, become capable of reading a broader field of simple texts.  Students also continue to use the Chinese word processor to write simple sentences about themselves and their daily activities.  Prerequisite: Intermediate-Low Chinese.

In this course students continue to develop their listening and speaking skills, learning to satisfy most survival needs and limited social demands.  With the addition of 200 characters, students become capable of reading authentic texts in Chinese.   Students will also have the opportunity to build their vocabulary and perfect their pronunciation.  Prerequisite: Intermediate-Mid Chinese.

Chinese Comprehension and Handwriting 1 credit

This course is designed specifically for students who have completed Intermediate-High Chinese but wish to consolidate their language skills before taking an advanced level course. The emphasis in this class is upon the production of sustained oral and limited written discourse in Chinese, with particular attention to culturally appropriate expression. At the same time, start to learn hand write Chinese characters and prepare for next level: Advance study in Chinese Handwriting. Prerequisite: Intermediate-High Chinese.

Advanced Study in Chinese Handwriting 1 credit

This course is designed for the students who have learned Chinese for at least 4 years and planed to take further Chinese courses in college. In this course students continue to fine-tune the Chinese language skills acquired in previous years of Chinese study. The students in this class will learn basic strokes, stroke order of Chinese, and how to handwrite Chinese characters correctly. They also will learn the structure of Chinese characters. And they should be able to write most basic, common used characters after this course.
