Andreas Marggraf in Germany discovered zinc in 1500. Zinc comes from the German word "zink ". Zinc was used for centuries before it was recognized as a distinct element. The metal was rediscovered in Europe, and William Champion started a zinc industry in England in 1740's. A brass, mixture of copper and zinc, was found in Palestine from between 1400-1000. This brass was used as ores. Also an alloy containing 87% zinc was found in prehistoric ruins in Transylvania.
