Production and Uses of Ytterbium

Most commercial ytterbium is gathered from monazite sand. Ytterbium can also be extracted from ytterbium fluoride and ytterbium chloride.

*Ytterbium can be used in improving the grain refinement, strength, and other mechanical properties of stainless steel.

* When electricity is unavailable, ytterbium can be used with a portable x-ray machine.

*Ytterbium can be used with the strength and magnification of a laser beam.
