TiN'S

HISTORY

Basic History- Tin has been known since ancient times (click here --> Cross to see biblical references to Tin).  Tin was isolated by the ancients by the reduction of the dioxide SnO2 with the burning of coal.

SnO2 + 2C ==>Sn + 2CO

Early metal workers found tin too soft for most practical purposes.  However, they found that when mixed with copper, tin played a major part in the production of bronze alloy, bringing the metal to fame in the Bronze Age.

Name History- The name Tin originates from the Anglo-Saxon word "tin", as well as a dedication to the Etruscan god, Tinia.  The origin of the symbol Sn comes from the Latin word for Tin, Stannum.
