Strontium has many many different uses
other than just being the topic of this website. Because of the vibrant
color, especially red, that strontium gives off when it reacts with oxygen, it
is often used in fireworks. More recently, strontium has been used to
produce glass for color television picture tubes. However, there is
another use for strontium which can be quite dangerous. Strontium 90, an
isotope, is highly radioactive. This characteristic makes it potentially
harmful to the health of humans. In addition, its radioactivity makes it a
bi-product of uranium and plutonium in nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons.
Strontium 90 has a large amount of radioactive decay, which produces
electricity, and can be used as a remote power source for weather stations and
space vehicles. In addition, strontium 90 has been used for treatment of
eye disease as well as for cancer.
