Uses of Silver and its Compounds: Pure silver is known to be the best, out of all metals, for conducting both heat and electricity. Because of this property pure silver is sometimes used to create printed circuit boards, electrical contacts and the making of solder. Silver is also known as a good reflector of light and so sometimes mirrors can be made out of silver but a protective coating must be put over it in order to prevent the mirror from tarnishing. Silver has also been known for making coins, but more recently other metals have been used because of cheaper costs. Though it is rare that pure silver is used to make jewelry, sterling silver, which is an alloy of silver, which contains 92.5% silver, is used to make silverware, jewelry and other ornaments and decorative items. High capacity batteries can also be made using silver and other products such as zinc and cadmium. Some compounds that include silver such as silver nitrate (AgNO3) can be used to make films and photographs because it is light sensitive. An interesting use of one silver compound, Silver Iodide, (AgI) is used to produce rain by seeing clouds.
