Platinum's Compounds
Uses Of Platinum |
Extensively used in jewelry, wire, and vessels for laboratory use, and also in many important precious devices and instruments, which include therocouple elements.
Platinum is also used for electrical contacts, corrosion-resistant apparatus, and in dentistry.
The metal form is used in the coated of missile nose cones, jet engine fuel nozzles, etc., which is expected to perform reliably at constant high temperatures.
Platinum can be used as an excellent catalyst during the process of producing sulfuric acid. It can also be used as a catalyst during the process of breaking up petroleom products. Another example of how platinum can be used as a catalyst is in fuel cells and in anitpollution devices for automobiles.
Platinum also acts as a catalyst when it is used in cathodic protection systems for large ships and ocean-going vessels, pipelines, steel piers, etc. The platinum wires will glow red hot when placed inthe vapor of methyl alcohol. It acts as a catalyst when it converts the alcohol tto formaldehyde. The result of this production is used to produce cigarette lighters and hand warmer.
