Atomic Mass (AKA
Average Atomic Mass or Atomic Weight):
weighted average of the masses of isotopes of an element.
Atomic Number: the number of
protons in the nucleus of an atom; this is the same number for electrons
in a neutral atom.
Crystal Structure: the arrangement
of atoms when the element is in its solid state
Electron: negatively charged
subatomic particle of an atom; located in the electron cloud, an area
outside the atom’s nucleus
Isotope: a variation of an element
atom due to a slight difference in the number of neutrons. The isotopes
are averaged (depending on how often they occur in nature) to find the
average atomic mass of an element.
Natural Abundance: how often
the isotope occurs in nature
Neutron: neutrally charged subatomic
particle of a atom; located in the atom’s nucleus
Proton: neutrally charged subatomic
particle of a atom; located in the atom’s nucleus
