Story of Discovery: The dioxide (MnO2) was reduced with charcoal (essentially carbon) by heating and the result was a sample of metal manganese.
Discoverer: Johann Gahn
Origin of Name: From the Latin word "manges" meaning "magnet", or "mangesia nigri" meaning "black magnesia."
