STRUCTURE OF THE ELEMENT


Hydrogen is located at the top of group 1 of the periodic table with an electronic configuration of 1s1 Due to having one single, easily detached electron it is sometimes considered as apart of the alkali metal group. The Alkali's location on the periodic table is from Lithium on though. This is where Hydrogen makes an exception. Hydrogen stands at the head of the alkali metals of Group 1 and the Halogens Group VII. It similiarly belongs to the Halogens group due to it having one electron less than the inert, neighboring gas of Helium. Hydrogen's crystal structure is abbreviated as hcp meaning hexagonal close packed. See Figure 2.
