Uses
Pure gold is very soft, making it impossible to use for an everyday situation. Instead, gold is hardened by using silver and copper to alloy it. The different amounts of karats of gold tell how much copper and silver is in the gold, with 24 karat gold being pure gold. Gold alloys have been used for centuries for things like jewelry, currency, and a standard for monetary exchange in many countries. It is also the best conductor for electricity next to copper. Gold is also essential for technology such as computers, communications equipment, spacecrafts, and jet engines. Many times gold is also used in dentistry for cavity fillings. The gold isotope Au-198, which has a half life of 2.7 days, is frequently used in cancer treatments.
