There is no one discovery date of gold; gold has been an element of high value since the beginnings of times. Gold is mentioned in places such as in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Old Testament, and gold was a large factor for European Exploration in the Americas.   Locations such as Egypt, Nubia, the Black Sea, Lydia, and South Africa have been long famed for their gold.

The primary goal of the alchemists was to chemically replace other substances to make gold. Although they were unsuccessful, they began to experiment with other chemicals; this was the introduction to today’s chemistry.

The value of gold was also the cause for a number of Gold Rushes during the 19th century in places such as California, Colorado, Otago, Australia, the Black Hills, and Klondike. The largest gold depository in the world is the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank. Two-thirds of the world’s gold supply comes from South Africa. Most of the U.S. gold comes from South Dakota and Nevada.
