The History of Europium
The knowledge of Europium first came about in 1890. Scientist Lecoq de Boisbaudran was studying the spark spectral lines of samarium and gadolinium when he noticed that not all of these lines belonged to the two elements. He then predicted the existence of an element similar to Europium. However, the discovery of Europium is credited to French scientist Eugene Demarcay. Demarcay stumbled upon Europium while working in his laboratory in France in 1901. While separating the rare earth ore of monazite, Demarcay found a nearly pure form of the element. Demarcay also spectroscopically proved the existance of Radium. However the purest form of Europium was not found until many years later while creating the element synthetically. Demarcay decided to name the element after the New Latin word Europa, which of coarse means Europe.
