Compounds Involving Chlorine

Chlorine is never found in its natural state. It forms compounds and bonds with most elements.
When chlorine reacts with water, hypochlorous acid, HClO, is formed. Hypochlorous acid is used to kill germs and it is used to bleach.
When chlorine is mixed with hydrogen, HCl, or hydrochloric acid is formed.
H2Cl2 --> HCl
One of the most important substances to humans is salt. Chlorine is also found in salt. When sodium is heated, a chemical reaction between chlorine and sodium occurs. The ion form of chlorine, found in salt, is not harmful to humans like the regular form of chlorine is.
