In the universe the abundance of carbon is 5,000,000 parts per billion by weight, this makes it the 5th most abundant at 0.5%.
Carbon makes up about 3,000,000 parts per billion by weight of the sun.
Carbon makes up around 15 million parts per billion by weight on average in meteorites.
In the Human body carbon makes up 230 million parts per billion by weight, this makes it the 3rd most abundant in our bodies, at about 23%.

Due to carbon's ability to form compounds with a vast number of elements even being able to link with other carbon atoms, it is found in vast places. Carbon is found in abundance in the sun, many stars, comets, and in the atmosphere of most planets, including earth. In some meteorites carbon is found in the form of diamond crystals. Also natural diamonds are found through out the world mainly in South Africa and Arkansas. Many diamonds are now being discovered along the ocean floor, particularly off the Cape of Good Hope. Carbon is also found in compounds such as hydrocarbons (methane gas, oil, and coal) these are obtained in mountain regions and oil deposits throughout the world. They are also found in carbonates, like limestone and dolomite. Also graphite is found naturally in many locations.
