General Information

Methamphetamine is a powerfully addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system. It is a psychostimulant drug that can be medically prescribed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obesity, and narcolepsy, but it is mostly used for recreation. Methamphetamine is an illegal substance also known as “meth,” “speed,” “crystal,” and “ice,” and can be easily made in clandestine laboratories with inexpensive house hold ingredients. Methamphetamine is a Schedule II stimulant meaning it has a higher potential for abuse and is only available through prescription. This potent synthetic drug causes euphoria and excitement, which causes addiction. Methamphetamine enters the brain and triggers a release of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Methamphetamine acts as a dopaminergic and adrenergic reuptake inhibitor and as a sympathomimetic. Methamphetamine can be injected, snorted, taken orally, or smoked. It is a white, odorless, bitter-tasting crystalline powder that easily dissolves in water or alcohol, which makes it easier for the substance to be injected. It can also give periods of high energy and fast talking when used. Users also experience severe depression, delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and violent behavior. Users may become obsessed or perform repetitive tasks such as cleaning, hand-washing, or assembling and disassembling objects.
