Historical Background
DMT can be found in the yopo seeds, and traces of DMT were found nearby an 8th century Indian burial ground in Chile. The native shamans of South America used DMT for rituals. In the 1400s when Columbus found Hispaniola, (Modern day Hati and the Dominican Republic) it was reported that the natives were snorting ground up yopo seeds. In 1931 the chemist Richard Manske was able to isolate DMT. In 1955 DMT was found in the Yopo tree, showing that DMT occurs naturally. DMT gained popularity in the 1960s and was outlawed under the Controlled Substances Act of 1971. The yopo seed is still used by the Mataco Indians of Argentina and other DMT plant are used by many differnert tribes of indigenous peoples.
