Definitions
Adrenal Gland:
Either of two small, dissimilarly shaped endocrine
glands, one located above each kidney, consisting of
the cortex, which secretes several steroid hormones,
and the medulla, which secretes epinephrine.
Hemorrhage:
Excessive discharge of blood from the blood vessels;
profuse bleeding.
Bronchodilator:
A drug that widens the air passages of the lungs and
eases breathing by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle.
Antispasmodic:
A drug used to relieve or prevent spasms (especially of
the smooth muscles)
Vasoconstrictor:
Any agent that causes a narrowing of an opening
of a blood vessel: cold or stress or nicotine or epinephrine
or norepinephrine or angiotensin or vasopressin or certain
drugs; maintains or increases blood pressure
Anaphylactic Shock:
A sudden, severe allergic reaction characterized
by a sharp drop in blood pressure, urticaria, and breathing
difficulties that is caused by exposure to a foreign substance,
such as a drug or bee venom, after a preliminary or
sensitizing exposure. The reaction may be fatal if emergency
treatment, including epinephrine injections, is not
given immediately.
Chloroquine:
An antibiotic used to treat malaria and amebic dysentery
and systemic lupus erythematosis
Obstetrics:
The branch of medicine that deals with the care of
women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative
period following delivery.
Hypoglycemia:
Abnormally low blood sugar usually resulting
from excessive insulin or a poor diet
Hay Fever:
An allergic condition affecting the mucous membranes of
the upper respiratory tract and the eyes, most often
characterized by nasal discharge, sneezing, and itchy,
watery eyes and usually caused by an abnormal sensitivity
to airborne pollen.
Palpitation:
A rapid pulsation; a throbbing; esp., an abnormal,
rapid beating of the heart as when excited by violent
exertion, strong emotion, or by disease.
Anxiety:
Concern or solicitude respecting some thing or event,
future or uncertain, which disturbs the mind, and keeps
it in a state of painful uneasiness.
Hypertension:
A common disorder in which blood pressure remains
abnormally high
Cardiomyopathy:
A disease or disorder of the heart muscle, especially
of unknown or obscure cause.
Cyanosis:
A bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous
membranes resulting from inadequate oxygenation of
the blood.
Somnolence:
A state of drowsiness; sleepiness.
Dyspnea:
Difficulty in breathing, often associated with lung
or heart disease and resulting in shortness of breath.
Arrhythmia:
An irregularity in the force or rhythm of the heartbeat.
