Fluoxetine Hydrochloride, which we know by its commercial name “Prozac”, is an anti-depressant drug used to treat psychological disorders.  Prozac is most commonly used to treat depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and eating disorders.  The key ingredient, Fluoxetine, affects the way a person’s brain sends and receives information by inhibiting the uptake of a chemical called "serotonin" into the brain.  Prozac is the most widely prescribed anti-depression drug and is used to treat a large variety of disorders.  Prozac is an entirely synthetic compound and is not found in nature.  It is now mass produced by drug companies world wide. It was first synthesized in the lab by American scientist David Wong in 1974.  It was first marketed by the Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals in 1987.
