Over One hundred fifteen thousand Americans are currently undergoing methadone treatment. If Methadone was more readily available to the public it is thought that this number would be tens or even hundreds of thousands. Today the ratio of people, in America, on methadone to heroin is two to ten. In places where Methadone is much more publicly distributed this ratio is as high as six to ten. It is thought that if even a fraction of the current heroin addicts were put into methadone treatment then a large reduction in heroin related deaths and diseases would be observed. Methadone can only be obtained legally through a doctor, but has been sold illegally on the drug black market because of its side effects. |
