Phencyclidine (PCP) was first synthesized by the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company and then patented in 1958 as an intravenous general anesthetic also known as Sernyl. Even though the drug was beneficial because of the low potential for depression during respiration in therapeutic doses, the value of the drug was highly questioned among scientists and doctors; the patients who were administered the drug became agitated, disoriented, and delirious while often having hallucinations.
Because of these effects, Parke-Davis discontinued all human testing in 1965, but became a veterinary anesthetic, Sernylan, in 1967. Shortly after, in 1978, Sernylan was withdrawn from the medical market and became known in illicit laboratories as the sole source of PCP. The first reports of the illicit use of PCP came from the Haight-Ashbury district in 1967. The creators of the drug were selling their product known as the "Pea Ce Pill." Because of the adverse effects of the drug, the Peace Pill was shortly discontinued after it caused a series of "bad trips."
PCP is now found on the street as capsules, liquids, and various colored tablets and powders. The drug is also able to be smoked when mixed with marijuana, cloves, mint, tobacco, and parsley. In it's natural state, it is found to be a white crystalline powder which is dissolvable in water or alcohol.
Today, people still use this drug as a way to get a nice "trip", or a kind of euphoria that is common from the drug. When this drug was used a medical anesthetic, more people than not would enjoy the effects from the drug, but not understand them.
