Ritalin is a stimulant (in the same group as cocaine) used to treat children with ADHD (attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder) and narcolepsy. It stimulates the brain and central nervous systems to slow down hyperactive children and improve their ability to concentrate. Because of the affect of better concentration, many teens abuse Ritalin. They either grind it into a thin powder and snort it or dissolve it in water and inject it. More and more children are exposed to this harmful drug because of the raise in the prescriptions over the years.

Ritalin should not be used by anyone under six years of age. Suppression of growth occurs in children that were on stimulents for long periods of time. Therefore, the long-term therapy is not recommended for Ritalin.

Ritalin is extremely unsafe, but it is being prescribed more and more over the years. There is a large controversy over whether or not the drug should still be in use.
