In 1884 cocaine was very widely used as a local anesthetic. But in the end of the 1800’s cocaine was proved to be a very addictive drug, and it had very addictive properties inside of it. Doctors realizing the risk of using cocaine as an anesthetic tried to find a substitute for it and set to work in their laboratories, by first re-examining the chemical structure of cocaine. The first synthetic cocaine products were too irritating to be of any use. Then a man named Alfred Einhorn, who was German, first synthesized in 1905 as being a substitute of cocaine. After synthesizing his compound Einhorn gave his substance a trade name known as Novocaine as everyone knows it to be today. Novocaine proved to be a very useful drug such as cocaine was but without any addictive qualities or drawbacks. Novocaine instantly became to be a very popular anesthetic for medical and dental reasons.
