The Finnish Sugar Co. developed a method to efficiently synthesize it from cane, beet sugar, an other fruits and some vegetables. Now, Staley and five other American companies make fructose from corn.

During the refining process, the natural sugar that is stored in plants is separated from the rest of the plant material. This is accomplished by grinding the cane to extract the juice and then boiling the juice until the syrup thickens and crystallizes. Then by spinning the crystals in a centrifuge you are able to produce raw sugar. To finish off the process the sugar is washed and filtered to remove the last remaining plant materials, colored and then crystallized, dried and packaged.
