History of Dipentum (Olsalazine Sodium):

History of Dipentum (Olsalazine Sodium): Dipentum was originally used as a yellow dye. J.R.Geigy filed a patent in 1914 and 1915 for olsalazine. It was then improved and patented by K.H. Agback and A.S.Nygren in 1981,1985 to Pharmacia AB. In 1982 C.P. Willloughby preformed tests. R.A. van Hogezand, J. Chromatog, H. Sandberg-Gertzen, Scand J. Gastroenterol, and S.S. Rao preformed many tests throughout the years.

Dipentum has also been tested on rats, it is found to be toxic to the kidney in overdoses. On 400 mg/kg a day, it gave the rats Nephritis and Tubular Necrosis in a study done over 4 weeks. In a one-year study including the problems listed above it also gave the rats Renal Fibrosis, Mineralization and Transitional Cell Hyperplasia.

Dipentum (Olsalazine) was compared to Placebo's on humans in a six-month study. With 52 patients haven taken olsalazine and there was only 12 relapses of colitis. While 49 patients took Placebo's and there was 22 relapses.

Other historical information, like how they found out it helps colitis was just found out by doing tests. The other different sources I used didn't give much other historical information that's not already on this page.
