Definitions

barbiturates  - a salt or ester of barbiturate acid used as sedatives and hypnotics

GABA - Gamma Amino Butyric Acid an inhibitory neurotransmitter and ion channel which allows passage of chloride ions. 

ion - an atom or group of atoms that carries a positive or negative electric charge as a result of having lost or gained one or more electrons; or a free electron or subatomic charged particle.

membrane potential - a difference in voltage across a membrane due to differences in ion concentration between the inside and outside of a cell.

neuron - grayish or reddish granular cell with specialized processes that is fundamental functional unit of nervous tissue.

neurotransmitter - a chemical that transmits nerve impulses across synapses.

stereospecific - a type of chemical bond that requires a definite arrangement of particular atoms.

synapse - the point at which a nervous impulse passes from one neuron to another neuron.
