        Midazolam hydrochloride is a synthetic compound manufactured by Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc. and is commonly known by its brand name, Versed.  It is used for conscious sedation before surgery to relieve anxiety and/or impair memory.
        Versed is in a class of chemicals called benzodiazepines which are all sedatives, hypnotics and/or muscle relaxants.   Other benzodiazepines are Xanax (alprazolam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam), and Halcion (trazolam).
