Congratulations to all of our athletes who competed in the
2008 NCISAA 3A State Track and Field Championships May 16th and 17th
at Forsyth Country Day School.
Everyone performed very well against some tough competition.
In fact, 23 out of our 34 athletes had at least one performance that
equaled or bettered their season best!
The girls team had many excellent performances to take 4th
place overall for the 3rd year in a row.
Leading the way as she has done all season was Tyler Ford with two State
Championship performances in the long jump (18’0.25”) and triple jump (38’10”
State and Cary Academy Record) and two 2nd place finishes in the 100m
and 200m. Nicole Kofman also
performed very well jumping a personal best of 5’0” to finish 2nd in
the high jump. Therice Morris
improved her best time by over a second to finish 3rd in the 100m
hurdles (16.77), was 4th
in the high jump and ran a personal best in the 300m hurdles (9th).
Rachel Park finished out an outstanding high school career dropping her
season best 3200m time by 20 seconds (11:46.48) to take 3rd , running
another season best time in the 1600m (5:30.67) for 6th, and a quick
leg on the 5th place 4x800m team along with Emily Cornell, Danielle
Curran, and Rachel Gonsalves. The
girls 4x400m team of Heather Warner, Emily Cornell, Rachel Gonsalves, and
Michelle Montpetit ran a season best time to finish 5th.
Madison Slate tied her personal record in the high jump to finish 7th
and set a personal record in the pole vault clearing 7’6” for 11th.
The girls 4x200m relay, Blythe Friedman, Meg Bryson, Kelley Sousa, and
Michelle Montpetit ran a strong race to take 8th.
Meg Bryson (300mH), Danielle Curran (3200m), Emma Frank (pole vault),
Rachel Gonsalves (3200m), Michelle Montpetit (400m), and Heather Warner (pole
vault) all either tied or surpassed their season best performances.
Francesca Boone completed her Cary Academy career with strong
performances in the discus and shot put.
The boys team also had many strong performances for their
best overall finish of 9th place.
Nick Kisley had an fantastic meet setting two personal records to finish
2nd in both the 1600m and 3200m and was a member of the 4x400m relay
team with Kenny Thomson, Daniel Miller, and Dorian Crawford that ran a season
best time to finish 7th.
David Dement ran a very strong 3200m in a personal best time (10:08.01) to take
5th overall. Aaron Jones
threw a personal best of 113’2” and Miguel Alecio had a strong throw of 112’8”
to finish 5th and 6th in the discus.
Dorian Crawford ran a personal record (51.99) in the preliminaries of the
400m and was just shy of that time finishing 6th in the finals.
Cameron Lee finished his Cary Academy career making the finals in the 100m for
the first time finishing 8th
overall and anchored a strong run by the 4x100m relay with Adi Sapasetty,
Dylan Sweetwood, and Kenny Thomson that also finished 8th.
Cam Setzer and Jacob Barish tied their personal records, 11’ and 10’
respectively, to take 8th and 12 in the pole vault.
Thomas Graham in his first State Championships as an 8th
grader ran a fabulous 1600m to win the “slow” heat in
4:39.92 which placed him 8th overall.

Triangle Independent Schools Athletic Conference (TISAC) Championships,
Saturday, May 10th
Congratulations
to all the athletes who competed in this year's TISAC
Championships. At practice on Friday, we dedicated the meet to Johnetta
Overton, a wonderful young lady and talented student-athlete who was tragically
killed in a car accident the night before last year's championships. I
know that each of our athletes tried their best to compete with the
determination, sportsmanship, and grace that Johnetta always did.
Girls: DA – 122,
CA – 100, RAV – 100, NRCA – 48, SM – 5
In a fantastic team performance with 17 of 22 girls scoring,
the Girls Varsity Track & Field Team finished tied for 2nd in the
2008 TISAC Championships on Saturday.
The team was led by the meet's Girls MVP, Tyler Ford, who won all 4 of
her events (100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump) and set another school record
(19'8") in the long jump. Therice Morris also had an outstanding meet
finishing 2nd in the 100m hurdles, high jump and 4x100m relay (with Roddy Moye,
Meg Bryson, and Blythe Friedman, and third in the 4x200m relay (with Blythe
Friedman, Heather Warner, and Michelle Montpetit). Several girls competed
and scored in more than one event (Meg Bryson, Emily Cornell, Danielle Curran,
Blythe Friedman, Rachel Gonsalves, Michelle Montpetit, Rachel Park, Madison
Slate, and Heather Warner). Danielle
Curran ran a very gutsy 400m to qualify in her 4th event for the State
Championships (already qualified in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m), Emily Cornell
ran 5:54.6 in the 1600m to qualify in her second event for the State
Championships (already qualified in the 800m) and Michelle Montpetit qualified
in her first event running a 1:05.0 in the 400m.
Boys: DA – 108,
RAV – 72, NRCA – 53, CA - 39
The boys team held their own in several single events but
just didn't have the depth to keep up and thus, finished fourth overall.
Nick Kisley had an excellent meet winning the 1600m running a personal best of
4:33.0 and the 4x800m relay with David Dement (also 5th in the 1600), Thomas
Graham, and Max Hamilton (also 3rd in the 4x400m relay). Nick also scored in
the 800m finishing 4th. Other scoring athletes included: Cam Setzer
(2nd pole vault), Dorian Crawford (3rd 400m, 3rd 4x400m relay), Kenny Thomson
(3rd long jump, 3rd 4x400m relay), Cameron Lee (3rd 100m), Daniel Miller (3rd
4x400m relay), Miguel Alecio (4th discus and 5th shot put), Alex Evans (4th
3200m in a State Championship qualifying time), Jacob Barish (4th pole vault),
Aaron Jones (5th discus), and Will Moore (5th triple jump).

Varsity Track & Field Finishes Regular Season Strong at NRCA
Girls:
CA – 109, NRCA – 72, WOG – 43, STD – 28
Cary Academy
Varsity Track and Field completed their regular season with a strong meet
against NRCA, St. David’s School and Word of God on Friday. Congratulations to
the girls team who won the meet to finish the season 18-1 overall and 8-0 in the
conference. Tyler Ford capped off a
fantastic regular season by winning 4 events (100m, 200m, long jump and triple
jump) and setting 2 new school records in the process:
12.0 in the 100m and 25.4 in the 200m.
She now holds school records in all 4 events.
Therice Morris was a double winner running a personal best to win the
100m hurdles (17.1) and jumping 5’ to win the high jump.
Meg Bryson also had a person best to win the 300m hurdles (54.1) and
Heather Warner won the pole vault going 6’6.
Danielle Curran, Emily Cornell, Heather Warner, and Michelle Montpetit
ran our best 4x400m relay time of the year for an exciting win.
Emily Cornell also ran a strong 800m (2:35.2) to qualify for the State
Championships. Great job, girls!
Boys:
NRCA – 107, CA – 79, STD – 56, W)G – 25
The boys team
also had a good performance finishing second and thus, end the season with an
overall record of 11-6. Nick Kisley
was a double winner in the 1600m and 3200m.
David Dement ran an excellent 800m finishing well ahead of the field in a
State Championship qualifying time of 2:07.7.
The boys 4x400m relay team of Kenny Thomson, Nick Kisley, Max Hamilton,
and Dorian Crawford ended the meet with a thrilling victory beating St. David’s
team by one second!

Varsity Track & Field Duals Durham Academy
The Varsity
Track & Field Team traveled to Durham Academy for its first straight dual meet
of the year. The girls team extended
its winning streak to 7-0 against TISAC conference teams and 15-1 overall by
defeating DA 71-64. Tyler Ford won
all 4 of her events: 100m, 200m,
long jump, and triple jump. Therice
Morris also had a strong meet placing 1st in the high jump and 4x100m
relay, 2nd in the 100m hurdles, and third in the 300m hurdles in a
State Championship qualifying time.
Rachel Park was a double-winner in the 1600m and 3200m.
The 4x800m relay (Rachel Blondy, Emily Cornell, Jennifer Johnson and
Rachel Gonsalves) and 4x100m relay (Kelley Sousa, Meg Bryson, Therice Morris,
and Blythe Friedman) also won.
Blythe Friedman qualified for the State Championships with a strong run in the
100m hurdles.
The boys team
competed hard but just fell short losing 69-55.
Nick Kisley ran very well winning the 800m and 1600m.
Miguel Alecio won the shot put with a school record and
State-Championship qualifying throw of 38’9”.
The relays also performed well finishing first in the 4x800m relay (Sam
Rochelle, Matt Makansi, Alex Evans and Max Hamilton), 4x200m relay (Adi
Sapasetty, Cam Setzer, Kayvan Daragheh and Jacob Barish), and 4x100m relay (Adi
Sapasetty, Dylan Sweetwood, Kenny Thomson and Cameron Lee).
Other individual event winners included Jacob Barish in the 300m hurdles,
Dorian Crawford with a personal best in the 400m and Thomas Graham, an 8th
grader, running the 3200m for his first time.
The team will
have some well-deserved rest before finishing its regular season at NRCA on May
2nd.

Athletes Compete Well at Local Invitational

Academy athletes competed in the Bojangles Apex Relays on Saturday, April 19th,
at Apex High School. For many of these athletes this was their first
experience in a large invitational meet: 55 boys and girls teams competed
in total. Tyler Ford led the way with a phenomenal performance in the long
jump exceeding her personal best (and school record) in 4 of her 6 jumps.
Her best jump of 19’6 ½ ” placed her 2nd overall, just ¾ of an inch
behind first. Tyler’s jump is the 8th best jump by a high
school female in the nation this year! The boys distance medley relay, Nick
Kisley (1200m), Dorian Crawford (400m), David Dement (800m), and Thomas Graham
(1600m) also broke the school record with a strong performance placing 5th
overall. Therice Morris was 10th in the high jump with a very
high clearance at 5’ and Kenny Thomson set a personal record with a leap of 19’8
¾” in the long jump. Meg Bryson, Emily Cornell, Blythe Friedman, Rachel
Gonsalves, Michelle Montpetit, Rachel Park, Cam Setzer, Madison Slate, Dylan
Sweetwood, and Heather Warner rounded out the Cary Academy team.
The entire Varsity team travels to Durham Academy on Wednesday for a meet
with DA and Fayetteville Academy.

Honored at Last Home Meet for the Season
During its
last home meet on Thursday, April 17, the Varsity Track & Field Team honored its
14 seniors: Francesca Boone, Danielle Curran, Max Flescher, Tyler Ford,
Blythe Friedman, Andrea Green, Max Hamilton, Angela Hayes (manager), Cameron
Lee, Marina Lee, Lanie Mason (manager), Rashidi Mullins, Rachel Park, and Hill
Winstead. The athletes and their parents were presented with water bottles
and yellow roses, respectively, while Coach McCoppin recognized each senior’s
many achievements and thanked them for their years of leadership and excellence.

Topples Conference Rivals
The Cary
Academy Girls Team (93 points) had yet another fabulous meet soundly defeating
Ravenscroft School (76.5 points), Durham Academy (74.5 points), and St. Mary’s
School (18 points). Tyler Ford led the way winning all 4 of her events,
long jump, triple jump, 100m, and 200m. She broke her school record in the
long jump for the second time this season with an amazing jump of 19’2.”
Other individual event winners included Danielle Curran (1600m) and Madison
Slate (pole vault), and the 4x800m relay (Rachel Blondy, Jennifer Johnson,
Hannah Kisley, and Danielle Curran). The win was a real team effort with
18 of the 25 athletes scoring! We also had four State Championship
qualifying performances: Meg Bryson (300mH), Rachel Gonsalves (800m),
Madison Slate (pole vault), and Heather Warner (pole vault).

Misses Two of its Top Scorers
The boys team
(26 points) fought hard but without Mitchell Ford (out due to injury) and Nick
Kisley (out due to illness) they couldn’t keep up with Durham Academy (76
points) who just beat out Ravenscroft (74 points). Cameron Lee had a
strong meet winning the 100m with a personal best and state qualifying time of
11.6 seconds and anchoring the 4x100m relay that finished an extremely close
second. Cam Setzer was our only other individual event winner in the pole
vault. Kenny Thomson scored lots of points placing in all 4 of his events:
long jump (2nd), 4x100m relay (2nd), 300m hurdles (3rd),
and 4x400m relay (3rd). Dorian Crawford,
Alex Evans, and Matt Makansi also had strong performances qualifying for
the State Championships in the 400m, 1600m, and 3200m respectively.

2008: Cary Academy vs. Cary Christian, Forsyth Country Day, NRCA, and Word
of God
Varsity Track & Field Girls Take First while the Boys Finish a Strong Second
It was the girls turn to win this week as they earned 129 points versus Forsyth
Country Day, 77.5 points, NRCA, 58 points, Word of God, 49.5 points, and Cary
Christian, 47 points. Tyler Ford remained undefeated for the season
winning the 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump. Other individual event
winners included: Danielle Curran (800m), Emma Frank (pole vault), Therice
Morris (high jump), and Rachel Park (3200m). Nicole Kofman jumped a
personal best in the high jump to qualify for the State Championships.
Danielle Curran also qualified for her third event in the State Championships by
running 5:45.1 in the 1600m.
The boys also had a strong meet finishing in second place with 101 points to
Forsyth Country Day (128.5 points). NRCA was third with 68 points, Word of
God was fourth with 50 points, and Cary Christian was fifth with 36 points. Nick
Kisley had another great meet wining the 800m in a State Qualifying time and the
1600m. Individual event winners also included: Miguel Alecio
(discus) and David Dement (3200m). Aaron Jones qualified for the State
Championships finishing second in the discus. Sam Marsico also threw over
100’ in the discus giving the Chargers three throwers over 100’. The boys
4x400m relay (Kenny Thomson, Nick Kisley, Max Hamilton and Dorian
Crawford) ended the meet with a very exciting win.
Next Thursday, April 17, is our last home meet for the season so please come out
to support the team on "Senior Night."

The Boys Varsity Track & Field Team had a very strong meet (128.5
points) handily defeating St. David's School (61 points), Cannon School (56.5
points) and Kerr Vance Academy (15 points). Mitchell Ford had another
outstanding meet besting his school records in the 110m and 300m hurdles and
leading off on the winning 4x100m relay. Individual event winners
included: Cam Setzer (pole vault), Miguel Alecio (discus), Cameron Lee
(100m), Alex Evans (1600m), Dorian Crawford (400m), Mitchell Ford (300m
hurdles), and David Dement (3200m). The boys 4x100m relay (Mitchell Ford,
Dylan Sweetwood, Kenny Thomson, and Cameron Lee) and 4x400m relay (Kenny
Thomson, Nick Kisley, Daniel Miller, and Dorian Crawford) also finished first.
In addition, Nick Kisley qualified for his second event in the State
Championships in the 3200m.
Girls:
Cannon School – 114, Cary Academy – 111, St. David’s School – 19, Kerr
Vance Academy – 6
The girls team in a great effort finished just 3 points (111 points) behind
Cannon School (114 points) and defeated St. David's School (19 points) and Kerr
Vance Academy (6 points). Tyler Ford had a very strong meet with 4
first place finishes in the long jump, triple jump, 100m, and 200m. Other
individual event winners included: Emma Frank (pole vault), Therice Morris
(110m hurdles), Rachel Park (800m), and Danielle Curran (3200m). Park's
and Curran's times also qualified them for the State Championships in those
events. The girls relays also were strong finishing first in the 4x800m
(Rachel Gonsalves, Jennifer Johnson, Emily Cornell and Rachael Blondy ) and
4x100m (Roddy Moye, Kelley Sousa, Therice Morris, and Blythe Friedman).

Varsity Girls and Boys Take 1st and 2nd Respectively

The Girls Varsity Track & Field Team beat Ravenscroft and The Durham School of
the Arts for its second straight win of the season. Notable performances
included Tyler Ford's school record in the long jump and State
Championship qualifying marks in the 200m and triple jump. Danielle Curran
(800m), Emma Frank (pole vault), Rachel Gonsalves (1600m), Hannah Kisley
(3200m), and Madison Slate (high jump) also qualified for
the State Championships.
The Boys Team finished a very close second to Ravenscroft and beat The Durham
School of The Arts. Not to be out-done by his sister, Mitchell Ford set
his own school record with a state-qualifying win in the 300m hurdles.
David Dement also qualified for the State Championships in the 3200m.
That brings us up to 9 girls and 7 boys who have qualified in a total of
20 events.
It was also exciting to have so many athletes improve on their marks from the
first meet. We continue to train
hard through these early season meets so it’s wonderful to see such great
performances already. Keep up the
good work team!

Boys' and Girls' Teams Open 2008 Season with Wins
On Thursday, March 20, both the boys and girls started the season with
victories!

Boys: Cary Academy - 93, Fayetteville Academy - 56, Cresset Christian - 13.

Girls: Cary Academy - 96, Village Christian - 11, Cresset Christian - 3.
The boys looked in fine form winning 11 of the 18 events. Six of the winners
not only won their event, but also qualified for the NCISAA 3A State
Championships:

Cameron Lee also had a strong meet just missing the qualifying mark by 0.1
seconds in the 100m and holding off a strong anchor leg by Fayetteville Academy
to win the 4x100m relay.
Although the girls meet pretty much was an intra-squad meet as Cresset Christian
and Village Christian only had one girl each, the Charger girls used the
opportunity to test themselves. The following four girls also qualified
for the State Championships:
