May 17, we played Charlotte Country Day for the NCISAA
Championship. We won with a final score of 5-4
The Cary
Academy
men’s tennis team defeated Charlotte Country Day School 5
matches to 4 to win the NCISAA state championship on
Saturday. CCDS was the defending state champions and had
eliminated CA from the state tournament in the last two
years. It seemed appropriate that we had to go through CCDS
to reach our goal. CCDS has been a powerhouse in NCISAA
men’s tennis for many years and we congratulate them on an
excellent season.
Captains Taylor Meyer and Dennis Gugger gave the team a big lift
winning the first point of the match at #1 doubles with a
decisive 3rd set victory of 6-0. That win gave us
the momentum we needed to win #2 and #3 doubles. James
Atkinson and Zach Sarnoff came from behind in the second set
and played clutch tennis to win #2 doubles in a 2nd
set tiebreaker. Within a minute later, Mike Kohagen and Zach
Miller won #3 doubles to give our team a three matches to
zero lead. Our 4th point came from Zach Miller at #6 singles
winning his match 6-1, 6-2. And finally, Mike Kohagen rose
above the pressure to win his match at #5 singles and give
our team the 5th and final point that we needed.
The entire team won with fantastic class and sportsmanship. This
was a great day for Cary
Academy
tennis!
I want to give a special thanks to our three seniors Taylor Meyer,
Clayton Gladieux and Dennis Gugger for all of their hard
work and commitment to the team over the years.
A big thanks also goes out to all of the
Cary
Academy supporters! We believe that our
large fan support at the match gave us the edge we needed to
win a state title.
Congratulations to the 2008 CA Varsity tennis team!
